New York City's Mini-plants On Line Next Month

LCG, May 18, 2001--The New York Power Authority said yesterday that 10 new mini-power plants that will add more than 400 megawatts to New York City's summer generating capacity will begin producing electricity next month.

Faced with tight power supplies, the New York State Public Service Commission last summer asked the Power Authority to take steps to make sure the Big Apple didn't run short this summer. The NYPA agreed to install 10 44 megawatt natural gas-fueled turbines in New York City and another on Long Island.

The mini-plants are being installed in industrial sections in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and on Staten Island, where they have met with opposition from activists claiming to represent the mostly poor and minority populations of those areas. Lawsuits have sought unsuccessfully to prevent the construction of the facilities in Queens and Brooklyn.

The NYPA says the locations for the plants were chosen because of their proximity to gas lines for fuel and electric substations so they can be hooked up to the New York City transmission system. The Authority further said the facilities exceed all existing environmental standards.

Louis Rodriguez, NYPA's director of southeast new York public affairs, said the new York City plants will be on line sometime in June and the Long Island plant will be completed in August.
