Enron Drops Plans for Florida Power Plant
LCG, June 14, 2001Enron Corp. has decided not to build a 500 megawatt power plant in Pompano Beach, Fla., and concentrate instead on a similar project in Deerfield Beach, about 10 miles north. The Pompano Beach project had met with local "not in my backyard" opposition and shortly after Enron withdrew its application local politicians took credit for scotching the deal. City commissioners would likely have turned now Enron's application anyway, said one who was considered the swing vote on the commission."They sort of saw the handwriting on the wall," said Commissioner Bob Shelley. "The concerns of the people in my district were insurmountable."The Pompano Beach facility was a small part of a grander Enron plan, according to spokesman Eric Thode. The company plans a natural gas pipeline from the Bahamas, which will carry fuel under the Gulf Stream from Grand Bahama Island to Port Everglades in Florida. The gas will be primarily used to generate electricity. In addition to its Deerfield Beach project, Enron also has plants under development in Fort Pierce and in Dade County, south of Miami. All three projects are pending local approvals.
