Unitil Asks for New Hampshire Rate Decrease

LCG, June 19, 2001--Concord Electric Co. and Exeter & Hampton Electric Co., both subsidiaries of Unitil Corp., have filed for a 15 percent rate decrease with the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission, the parent company announced yesterday.

If approved, the decrease would take effect on August 1 for customers of both electric companies. Unitil said the rate decreases are the result of lower proposed fuel and purchased power adjustments and will give customers of the two utilities the lowest rates in the region.

The company said a typical Concord residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours per month will see a decrease of $9.31, giving him a total monthly bill of $53.57. A typical Exeter & Hampton residential customer using 500 kilowatt-hours a month will see a decrease of $9.66, yielding a total monthly bill of $51.09.

The company giveth and the company taketh away. While Concord Electric and Exeter & Hampton customers see their rates decrease, those of Unitil's Massachusetts subsidiary, Fitchburg Gas & Electric Light Co., are likely to see their rates increase. Fitchburg asked Massachusetts regulators on May 25 for permission to raise rates to cover higher energy supply costs.
