Edison Mission Energy hit by Strike in Illinois

LCG, June 28, 2001Midwest Generation, an independent power producer subsidiary of Edison Mission Energy, said today that it would continue to operate its 12 fossil-fueled plants in Illinois even if employees who are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers walk off their jobs today.

The IBEW has threatened to call a strike today after rejecting a pay increase. Midwest Generation said in a statement that the union has demanded contract provisions that would "compromise the company's ability to operate and maintain its facilities."

Midwest Generation was created by Los Angeles-based Edison International Inc. subsidiary Edison Mission Energy in December 1999 to purchase the 12 plants from Commonwealth Edison Co. of Chicago. The generating stations supply power to ComEd under long-term contracts.

Contract talks ended last night without any significant movement toward a new collective bargaining agreement, Midwest Generation said. Local 15 of the IBEW, which represent more than 1,100 workers at the plants, said it would call a strike today if the company did not meet its demands.
