Enron May Exit Wind Power by Year End

LCG, July 5, 2001--Enron Corp. may exit the wind power business by the end of this year as part of its plans to refashion itself as a trading and marketing company, Enron Wind managing directorAndreas Reuter said yesterday.

Attending a week-long European Wind Energy Conference and exhibition in Copenhagen, Reuter said "Enron has a plan to sell off its assets not linked to trading, and Enron Wind is considered (such) an asset. We might find a solution this year."

"The most likely outcome is for a financial investor to take over the company and launch an IPO in two years time," he added.

Last year, Enron had trouble siting a wind farm in California when environmentalists discovered that the site chosen was in the path of flights by the almost-extinct California Condor, but another acceptable site was found.

In Europe, Enron has voiced interest in wind projects for Britain, France, Ireland and The Netherlands and has installed wind capacity in Germany and Spain. "If the British market starts moving, we would consider manufacturing blades over there," Reuter said.

Based on figures for the year 2000, Enron has about 6 percent of the world's installed wind power capacity, about a third of the leader Vestas Wind Systems of Denmark.
