Progress Energy Plans Florida Peaking Plant

LCG, July 10, 2001Progress Energy Inc. said yesterday it plans to build a 320 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant about 50 miles east of Sarasota. The facility is expected to begin commercial operation next year.

Progress Energy, which was formed by the merger between Carolina Power & Light Co. and Florida Progress Corp., said it had purchased the 30-acre site near Arcadia, Fla. from Entergy Wholesale Operations, and will lease additional property abutting it.

The company plans to install two 160 megawatt combustion turbines on the site, which will operate in simple cycle as a peaking plant, producing power during periods of highest demand.

Progress Energy said environmental permits and zoning have been approved for the site, and site clearing is scheduled to get under way today, followed this fall by construction, with the units coming on line next summer.

The 320 megawatt plant will be owned and operated by an ad hoc subsidiary, DeSoto County Generating Co. The site is permitted to accommodate an additional combustion turbine, though at this time, there is no definitive schedule for adding a third unit, the company said.
