Midwest Gen, Union Meet in Strike Talks
LCG, July 17, 2001Official of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and negotiators from Midwest Generation LLC, operator of 12 coal-fired power plants in Illinois, will meet with a federal mediator Thursday, the first indication of a thawing in the three-week old standoff.IBEW workers walked out at the 12 plants, which account for a quarter of all the electricity generated in Illinois, on June 28 after rejecting a pay raise offered by Midwest Gen. The company countered that the union had demanded work rules changes that would have usurped its ability to effectively manage the plants.A Midwest Gen spokesman confirmed the talks with the mediator, adding that the company welcomed the opportunity to sit down with the union to resolve their differences. The IBEW has said the company has refused to bargain in good faith. Its members have worked without a contract since April 1.The 12 plants, seven baseload stations and five peaking plants, were purchased from Commonwealth Edison Co., and ComEd buys their output. Together, they have a capacity of about 9,300 megawatts.Midwest Generation is owned by Edison Mission Energy, a subsidiary of Los Angeles-based Edison International Inc.
