UK to Push Hydroelectric Expansion
LCG, July 20, 2001Brian Wilson, the new energy minister in Britain's Labour government, was expected to announce plans today for an expansion of hydroelectric power as a means for the UK to meet climate change targets. The proposals are expected to set in motion a 250 million ($350 million U.S.) hydroelectric program by Scottish and Southern Plc, the Financial Times said. Scottish and Southern is the UK's largest hydroelectric generator.Wilson's plan is to extend the government's renewables program to include all new hydroelectric facilities and recondition plants of up to 20 megawatts, instead of the earlier limit of 10 megawatts. The proposal would likely draw fire from environmentalists who claim larger facilities damage eco-systems and endanger wildlife.Earlier this week, Wilson said that if the UK is to increase its reliance on renewables from the present 3 percent to the target of 10 percent of British generation "there has to be some give and take from environmentalists."Wilson added, "The government is expected to create a 1 billion market for renewable energy by 2010. The main driver for this will be the renewables obligation so it is crucial that this mechanism encompasses hydroelectric power."Scottish and Southern owns 56 hydroelectric plants in Scotland with a combined capacity of about 1,000 megawatts.
