Madison G&E Asks for Rate Hike

LCG, July 30, 2001--Madison Gas and Electric Co. said Friday it has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to recover additional costs associated with "providing reliable gas and electric service."

The proposed rate change is a $12 million, or 5.8 percent increase over current electric rates and a 0.7 percent increase in gas rates. This would result in a monthly increase of $3.24 for a typical residential electric customer and an increase of 58 cents for an average residential gas customer, the company said.

Madison Gas & Electric said the request includes replacement power expenses for an extended outage at the Columbia Generating Station which is set to be out of service an extra six weeks for major generator repairs next spring. The company owns 22 percent of the plant and receives more than 40 percent of its base power needs from Columbia.

"Columbia provides a large portion of our customers' power needs," said Jeffrey Newman, MG&E vice president and treasurer. "During a plant outage, replacement power comes primarily from new, natural gas-fired plants at much higher costs."

Newman noted that the request is limited to specific issues. "We are committed to supplyingreliable power to our customers at the lowest cost possible. We will not compromise our high levelof service," he said.

Madison Gas & Electric generates, transmits and distributes electricity to 126,000 customers inDane County, Wisc., and transports and distributes natural gas to 114,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties.
