Mirant to Build 286 Megawatt Plant in Washington

LCG, July 31, 2001--Mirant Corp. said this morning that it will build a 286 megawatt power plant in Longview, Wash., a paper manufacturing town on the Columbia River about 50 miles downstream from Portland, Ore.

The project, Mirant's first venture in the Pacific Northwest, will be undertaken in conjunction with Avista Corp. Avista has developed the project for the last two years and is now selling its interest to Mirant, though it will continue to assist with completion of licensing and other development activities.

Mirant said construction will begin soon on the natural gas-fired combined cycle facility and the plant is anticipated to come on-line by summer 2003. The gas turbine part of the project could begin generating electricity by summer 2002, the company said.

"Building power plants in the Pacific Northwest will help the entire region meet its energy needs and help correct the current imbalance between supply and demand," said Randy Harrison, chief officer of Mirant's western U.S. operations. "The Longview location is ideal because of its proximity to a steadysupply of natural gas and access to the transmission system, which carries power to consumers not only in Washington but throughout the West."

Terms of the deal with Avista were not disclosed.
