Three Dead in Blast at Enron Plant in England

LCG, Aug. 9, 2001--Two men died yesterday, a third this morning and another was seriously injured as the result of an explosion and fire that ripped through the transformer section of a power station owned by Enron Corp. of the U.S. near Middlesbrough in Teesside, England.

Two workers were killed outright and two others were taken to Middlesbrough general hospital with burns, where one of them died this morning. The other patient is stable with moderate burns. Hundreds of staff were on site at the time of the blast and they were all evacuated.

Following the tragedy, Enron Teesside Operations said in a statement "We can confirm there was an explosion and subsequent fire at Teesside power station at around 2:40 p.m. Emergency services were called and it is now under control and there is no danger off site. The area surrounding the power station has been evacuated. The company has set up an incident room and we are liaising with emergency services."

Later, as the accident hit home, an Enron spokeswoman said "This tragic incident has shocked and saddened everyone within the company and steps are being taken to support friends and colleagues at the plant and associated sites across Teesside."

Authorities said there was no risk to outsiders from the explosion. Police Inspector Sue Coates said the cause of the blast was not yet known. Damage was confined to a small area of the site where the four employees were working at the time.
