Jersey Town Okays Con Edison 500 Megawatter

LCG, Aug. 30, 2001--The power project development unit of Consolidated Edison Inc. said yesterday that it had received unanimous approval from the planning board of the south central New Jersey city of Lakewood for a 500 megawatt peaking power plant to be built in the community.

Con Edison Development said in a news release that its Ocean Peaking Power unit would invest about $220 million in the natural gas-fueled project, which will be built adjacent to a 236 megawatt cogeneration plant owned by another affiliate in Lakewood.

The new peaking plant is expected to operate only during periods of highest demand, or about 1,000 hours per year, the company said.

Con Edison Development said it would begin construction on the plant later this year, but did not venture a prediction of when it would begin commercial operation.
