Spanish Endesa to Sell Power Unit to Italy's Enel

LCG, Sept. 13, 2001--Spanish electric utility Endesa said yesterday it would sell its New Viesgo electric generation and distribution business to Enel of Italy for 2.147 billion euros ($2.39 billion U.S.).

New Viesgo will give Enel a foothold in Spain with a retail customer roster of more than a half-million representing about 3 percent of the Spanish distribution market. Its 2,365 megawatts of installed generating capacity is almost 5 percent of the Spanish total.

The financial channel between Endesa and Enel is a two-way street. In July, Endesa agreed to buy Enel's Elettrogen for 2.63 billion euros ($2.93 billion). Endesa has said it will place other assets on the market as part of a program to raise 20.5 billion euros ($22.8 billion).

Enel beat out rival bids from Spain's Hidroelectrica del Cantabrico, Belgium's Electrabel and a unit of France's Suez.
