Reliant May Sell Benelux Electric Subsidiary

LCG, Sept. 18, 2001--A unit of Reliant Energy Inc. said yesterday that it is considering selling a Dutch electric generation business it acquired in 1999 for $2.4 billion.

The Netherlands company, called UNA at the time Reliant bought it, is now called Reliant Energy Power Generation Benelux, and is a unit of Reliant Resources Inc., which was spun off from Reliant Energy but is still 80 percent owned by the Houston firm.

The possibility of selling Reliant Energy Power Generation Benelux is part of an overall evaluation of strategic alternatives, the company said in a news release.

"Reliant Resources continually evaluates its business portfolio and makes adjustments as necessary to ensure that our capital and human resources are optimally deployed to support the company's growth objectives," Robert Harvey, an executive vice president of Reliant Resources said in a statement.

When Reliant bought UNA, the company said the Dutch firm gave it a presence for further expansion in Europe. Now, according to spokeswoman Sandy Fruhman, Reliant will continue its European presence though its wholesale marketing and trading business, which is not affected by the strategic review.
