Energy East Plans New York Gas Storage Facility

LCG, Sept. 19, 2001--An Energy East Corp. subsidiary said yesterday it has asked federal regulators for permission to build a high-deliverability natural gas storage facility in depleted salt caverns near the Town of Reading, N.Y.

A subsidiary created to build and operate the storage facility is named Seneca Lake Storage Inc. and is, itself a subsidiary of Energy East unit Energy East Enterprises Inc.

Seneca lake Storage told the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that the facility will be linked to the Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation and Dominion Transmission, Inc. interstate pipelines to supply firm and interruptible storage services at market-based rates.

Seneca lake Storage said it expects to begin operating the facility in November of next year. It will have a projected working gas capacity of 300,000 dekatherms and will be capable of delivering up to 50,000 dekatherms a day.

The company said an open season to accept non-binding requests for firm storage service from the facility began September 1 and will continue through September 30.
