Regulators Okay Narragansett Electric Rate Cut
LCG, Sept. 24, 2001--The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission has approved a rate decrease for Narragansett Electric Co.'s Standard Offer service, the utility said Friday. The decrease will become effective on October 1.More than 99 percent of Narragansett's customers are on Standard Offer service. On August 28, Narragansett asked the commission for the rate decrease to reflect more accurately the current cost of power it purchases on behalf of its customers. The lower prices are a direct result of the recent decline in the price of oil and natural gas.The typical residential Standard Offer customer using 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will see an 8.1 percent reduction in the overall bill, or $5.38 per month. Business customers who take Standard Offer service will see reductions of from 8.1 percent to more than 10 percent, depending on their usage and rate structure."Last year, Narragansett Electric had to increase prices as a result of the extraordinary increases in the price of fuel that is used by power suppliers to generate electricity," said Michael Ryan, an executive vice president. "Over the last year, the commission demonstrated foresight during that period to allow us to recover power supply costs as they were incurred. As a result, we are now able to pass along to our customers the benefits of the recent dramatic reductions in power supply costs."The company serves about 460,000 customers in Rhode Island, and is a subsidiary of National Grid Plc of Great Britain.
