Mirant, Vattenfall Cancel German Utility Talks
LCG, Sept. 26, 2001--Joint venture talks between U.S. power producer Mirant Corp. and Sweden's Vattenfall to form a dominant utility in Germany have broken off and there is little likelihood of resumption, Mirant said this morning in a FAXed news release.Mirant's statement said top officials of both firms, meeting in Berlin, had decided to end the talks, which would have created a new electric utility in northeastern Germany by merging four existing companies. The four are Berlin's own utility Bewag, power producer Veag, coal company Laubag and Vattenfall subsidiary HEW.A chill had settled over the talks this morning when Vattenfall announced that it had already made up its mind on the person who would be chief executive of the utility.
