Cinergy in 570 Megawatt Power Plant for Texas Refinery

LCG, Sept. 28, 2001--Subsidiaries of U.S. utility holding company Cinergy Corp. and British oil giant BP Plc said yesterday they will build a new 570 megawatt cogeneration facility at a Texas City, Texas, refinery and chemical complex belonging to BP.

The new plant will allow BP to shut down older units, cutting nitrogen oxides emissions by 53 percent, the announcement said. The two subsidiaries, Cinergy Solutions and BP Global Power have formed a jointly-owned company, South Houston Green Power, to own and operate the plant.

"This project demonstrates you can have both -- more energy and a cleaner environment. The new facility will provide efficient, economical and environmentally beneficial energy to BP," said Steve Harkness, Cinergy Solutions' president and chief operating officer. "We're very pleased that BP selected us to partner with them on this project where we can demonstrate our ability to balance environmentalism with economics and reliability."

Cinergy Solutions operates the existing 250 megawatt plant at the site, which consists of six cogeneration trains and four boilers. Construction of the new plant is expected to take a little more than two years.

The facility will be fueled by natural gas and by-product gas from BP's refinery operations.
