Russia to Complete Soviet-era Nuclear Plant

LCG, Oct. 16, 2001--The Russian Atomic Energy Ministry is resuming construction of a nuclear power plant in the republic of Bashkortostan, on the lower reaches of the Volga river, according to an English language report picked up by the British Broadcasting Co. from Russian news agency Itar-Tass.

Itar-Tass said it learned of the plans to complete building the Soviet-era nuclear plant from Rosenergoatom, a Russian firm that will participate in its completion.

Development of the Bashkortostan plant was begun by the Soviet Union. However, the construction was suspended by a decision of the republican parliament in 1990 due to the anti-atomic campaign following the Chernobyl disaster, Itar-Tass said.

The plant, located in the town of Agidel, will have four reactors, each with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, and will incorporate improved safety design, but the news agency did not say whether the reactors would be protected by containment buildings. The facility will be Russia's 11th nuclear plant and is scheduled for commissioning in 2010.

At the time construction was halted, the plant was about 10 percent complete. The revived project will be financed by Bashkortostan and Rosenergoatom, Itar-Tass said.
