ERCOT Announces Organizational Changes to Promote Grid Reliability, Rapid Demand Growth, and Innovation

LCG, December 12, 2025--Today, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT) announced strategic organizational changes designed to accelerate innovation, strengthen grid reliability, and support the unprecedented growth in the demand for electricity across Texas. To meet these objectives, ERCOT created two new organizations: Interconnection and Grid Analysis, and Enterprise Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The two organizations will formally launch in January 2026.

NextEra Energy Resources and Basin Electric Power Cooperative Announce MOU to Develop 1,450-MW Natural Gas-fired Power Plant in North Dakota

LCG, December 8, 2025--Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC (NextEra) today announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the joint development of the River Run Energy Center, a new combined-cycle natural gas-fueled generation facility in Basin Electric's North Dakota service territory. The proposed facility will have a planned capacity of approximately 1,450 MW.

Montana Power in 5-year Power Deal with PPL

LCG, Oct. 17, 2001--Montana Power Co. and PPL Montana said separately yesterday they have reached a five-year deal with under which it will Montana Power receive 450 megawattsof electricity, beginning July 1 of next year.

Two-thirds of the amount will be baseload power while the remaining 150 megawatts will provide supply during periods of peak demand. The average wholesale price for the entire 450 megawatts is about $32 per megawatt-hour.

"Our objective was to obtain, on behalf of our customers, the best-priced electricity available on the market today. The bid process achieved the results we were hoping for," said Jack Haffey, president and chief operating officer of Montana Power's utility division. "Our customers are assured of safe and reliable electricity supply at very competitive prices."

PPL Montana, a subsidiary of Allentown, Pa.-based PPL Corp., was formed when PPL purchased the 154 megawatt J. E. Corette coal-fired power plant and Montana Power's 529 megawatt share in the Colstrip coal-burner from the utility. Altogether, PPL Montana owns about 1,150 megawatts of capacity in the state.

In its news release, PPL said the deal with Montana Power means it will have about two-thirds of the output of its Montana power plants under long-term contracts by next July.
