Duane Arnold Nuke Near Restart After Electric Fix

LCG, Oct. 23, 2001--A spokeswoman for the company that manages operation of Alliant Energy Corp.'s 535 megawatt Duane Arnold nuclear power plant near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said the plant was preparing for a restart after repairs made to a faulty electric system.

Maureen Brown, a spokeswoman for Nuclear Management Co., the plant's operator, said the maintenance work had been completed and the reactor was in "hot standby" yesterday morning. The continued shutdown of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Website, and its daily plant status report, makes it difficult to know whether the plant has been restarted.

Brown declined to guess at when the plant would be back in service, though yesterday's hot standby could mean today's restart. According to the Nuclear management Co. Website, Duane Arnold was at 7.8 percent power this morning. It will take several days to ramp the reactor up to full power.

The plant was shut down manually on October 17 when operators noticed a fault in the electric system that controls cooling water circulation. Workers took advantage of the shutdown to replace a pump seal that had been scheduled for repairs later this month.

Alliant Energy's IES Utilities Inc. owns 70 percent of Duane Arnold. Central Iowa Power Cooperative, with 20 percent, and Corn Belt Power Cooperative, with 10 percent, are the other owners.
