FERC Reaffirms Approval of Kern River Gas Projects

LCG, Oct. 25, 2001--The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission yesterday reaffirmed its approval of two projects by a unit of The Williams Cos. aimed at increasing capacity on a natural gas pipeline into California.

Objections to the Kern River Gas Transmission Co. projects had been raised by companies that are presently shippers on the line. They complained that expanding capacity for new customers would reduce space available for their gas and asked FERC to reconsider the project approval.

Noting that there is a "critical need" for more pipeline capacity to serve California's growing fleet of gas-fueled power plants, FERC said the benefits of the projects outweighed any potential adverse impact on existing customers.

The two projects, called "The California Action Project" and the "2002 Expansion Project" will provide almost 150 million cubic feet of gas per day from Wyoming to California, and are scheduled for completion next May. The Kern River pipeline stretches 922 miles from gas fields in Wyoming to California.

Separately, Fern River has asked FERC for approval of plans to add 900 million cubic feet of daily capacity to the line in a project that would more than double current capacity and cost around $1 billion.
