E·on Boosts Ruhrgas Stake to 34 Percent

LCG, Nov. 1, 2001--Big German utility Eon has increased its stake in Ruhrgas, Germany's biggest natural gas importer and distributor, to about 34 percent with the purchase of a 23.6 percent interest in Bergemann, another large Ruhrgas shareholder.

Eon had already attracted the attention of the German Federal Cartel Office, which is investigating the company's earlier purchase of a 25.5 per cent stake in Ruhrgas.

The acquisition of a portion of Bergemann gives Eon 23.6 percent of that company's 33 percent interest in Ruhrgas, bringing Eon's effective interest in Ruhrgas to 33.9 per cent.

The Cartel Office is concerned about the possibility of market abuse by Eon because of its growing control of the largest German gas importer while it also is a large retailer of natural gas. Eon has about 35 percent of the German retail gas market through its ownership of municipal energy providers and stakes in Contigas and Thuga.
