Tucson Electric, Salt River to Expand Power Plant
LCG, Nov. 7, 2001--An affiliate of Tucson Electric Power Co. and Salt River Project have agreed to pursue co-ownership and development of a project that will add 760 megawatts of capacity to the Springerville Generating Station in northeastern Arizona, TEP's parent holding company UniSource Energy Corp. said yesterday.Under terms of the joint development agreement, Salt River and UniSource Energy Development Co. would share ownership and development costs of Springerville Units 3 and 4. Salt River would also purchase a portion of the power generation from the facility, with the balance being supplied to other regional power companies, possibly including Tucson Electric. The expansion will double the capacity of the plant, the company said. Springerville currently consists of two 380 megawatt, coal-fired generating units owned by Tucson Electric. The construction of two new units is projected to commence next spring and will take about three years, UniSource said."This is a significant partnership with (Salt River), and it underscores the wisdom of planning for the energy future of our state's rapidly growing population," said James S. Pignatelli, chairman, president and chief executive of UniSource. "This plant is exemplary in that we will double its generating capacity while reducing its total regulated emissions."Salt River General Manager Richard Silverman said "The opportunity at Springerville is consistent with our history of providing cost effective, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy resources."The federal Salt River Project is the third largest public power utility in the nation, serving more than 750,000 electric customers in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
