Peco Upgrades Suburban Philly Gas Network

LCG, Nov. 15, 2001--Peco Energy Co. said yesterday it has completed 22 local projects in the Philadelphia suburbs to meet increasing demand for natural gas and improve service reliability.

The company said the projects involved replacement of underground gas mains in many of the region's older boroughs, installation of larger distribution facilities, increasing supply to ensure proper distribution pressure, and extension of new mains to serve growing communities.

The largest of the projects was the construction of a new gas gate station in Chester County, to expand gas supply to the southern end of the county. Gate stations connect the distribution network with nearby interstate pipelines and consist of pressure regulating, metering and odorization equipment.

Peco built a similar gas gate in the other end of Chester County last year and plans to build a third in Bucks County next year.

The company said it spent nearly $1.8 million in Montgomery County on 13 projects, completed two projects in Bucks County and finished "infrastructure upgrades" in Chester County.

Peco said that despite the investment, its natural gas rates will drop 29 percent effective December 1 after a formal rate decrease request was submitted to the state Public Utility Commission yesterday.

Peco delivers natural gas to 430,000 customers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties in southeastern Pennsylvania.
