Entergy Joins Proposed Southeast RTO

LCG, Nov. 21, 2001--Entergy Corp. said yesterday that it has joined the proposed SeTrans Grid Co. regional transmission organization, a new RTO that would serve the Southeastern U.S. and is backed by The Southern Co., which provides power to nearly 4 million customers in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.

While the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has said it favors consolidation of the nation's grid operators into four regional RTOs, utilities in the Southeast are reluctant to go along. Southern has said that several small independent system operators would serve the region better.

Southern has also said that setting up one huge regional network to provide what FERC calls "seamless" transmission access and market operations to all participants would require expensive transmission system upgrades that would be passed on to customer's power bills.

Yesterday, Entergy said the SeTrans model "is the best platform to achieve the mutual goals of the various involved companies."

The companies filed a status report on the RTO plan with FERC yesterday, including the information that Entergy has joined SeTrans.
