German Cartel Office Vetoes E·on-Ruhrgas-Deal
LCG, Dec. 3, 2001--Germany's cartel office, das Bundeskartellamt, has vetoed a plan by Eon, the country's largest utility, to acquire controlling interest in natural gas supplier Ruhrgas, the German newsweekly Der Spiegel said in yesterday's edition.Eon and the cartel office were said to be negotiating a compromise, but Eon declined comment.Der Spiegel said Ulf Bge, head of das Bundeskartellamt, had written a letter to Eon on Friday expressing concern that the acquisition would give Eon "greater influence" over a large number of local and regional gas distributors. Large gas dealers such as Contigas und Thgas were cited. It was implied that the cartel office had not made its final decision. The magazine said Eon officials feel participation in some public utilities must be possibly sacrificed, in order to allay concerns of the cartel office.
