Mirant to say 'Good-Bye' to India

LCG, Dec. 13, 2001--U.S. electric power generator Mirant Corp. confirmed this morning it would abandon its projects in India and cease doing business in that country because reforms in the Indian power sector have proved ineffective.

"The Indian energy market is imbalanced with high demand and short supply, but more institutional reform is necessary to support private sector participation," said Sanjay Kapoor, Mirant's manager for India.

The company said it will bow out of a joint venture to build a $5 billion power plant in the state of Orissa, which would have supplanted Enron Corp.'s Dabhol Power Project as India's largest plant. It will also walk away from a power project in West Bengal and close its office in the Indian capital of new Delhi.

Mirant was to have teamed up with India's Reliance Power in a 50-50 joint venture to build the 3,960 megawatt coal-fired Hirma power plant in Orissa. A Reliance spokesman said his company was "examining various options and is in discussions with the concerned authorities."

The Indian federal government has said the country needs to add more than 100,000 megawatts of generation over the next 10 years, doubling the present capacity. Together, Hirma and the nearly complete 2,184 megawatt Dabhol represent more than 6 percent of that objective.
