Dominion Begins Building Big Pennsylvania Plant
LCG, Dec. 21, 2001--Dominion Resources Inc. broke ground yesterday on a 1,200 megawatt, $800 million power plant called the Fairless Works Energy Center at the USX Industrial Park industrial center near Morrisville, in Bucks County, Pa.The Fairless Works, the cold rolling and tin mill of once-mighty U.S. Steel, was named after Ben Fairless, president of the steel maker from 1938 to 1955. On hand for the groundbreaking ceremonies were Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker and Thomas E. Capps, chairman, president and chief executive of Dominion Resources, presumably protected by hard hats.Schweiker noted that Dominion Resources "was creating new jobs here, and investing in new generation, which will make our competitive electricity market even stronger."When his turn came, Capps said "For Dominion, Fairless Works represents an important expansion to our portfolio of electric generation assets in the strategic Midwest-Northeast-Mid-Atlantic quadrant of the U.S. With the addition of this new facility to our existing fleet, we're increasing our footprint in a market that accounts for 40 percent of the nation's demand for energy."Dominion Resources said in its announcement that demand for energy in the region is expected to increase by more than 12,000 megawatts over the next decade. That's 10 more power plants, just like the one they began building yesterday.
