Exelon Backs West Virginia Wind Farm

LCG, Dec. 31, 2001--Exelon Power Team and Backbone Mountain Windpower jointly announced on Friday a 20-year agreement for Power Team to purchase the output of a 65 megawatt wind facility to be located near the town of Thomas, W.Va.

The project will consist of about 42 wind turbines, each rated at a nameplate capacity of around 1.5 megawatts. The facility will utilize the world's latest wind turbine technology and will be the largest commercial wind energy facility in the eastern United States, Exelon said.

The project, which is expected to enter commercial operation a year from now, will interconnect with the Allegheny Power System in the new PJM West Regional Transmission Organization and will be integrated with the main PJM RTO.

"We are always looking for ways to increase the diversity of our generating portfolio," said Mike Freeman, a long-term power manager for Exelon Power Team. "This agreement shows Exelon's commitment to building a reliable, low-emission generation portfolio."
