Council Bluffs, Iowa, to get 900 Meg Coal-burner

LCG, Jan. 8, 2002--Mid-American Energy said yesterday that it has selected Council Bluffs, Iowa as the preferred site for construction of a 900 megawatt, coal-fueled electric generating plant.

The company said it would begin building the $1.4 billion plant at the site of its Council Bluffs Energy Center (CBEC) environmental review, public hearings and regulatory approvals are out of the way.

The company said it expected the new facility to begin commercial operations in the spring of 2007.

Mid-American said it would operate the plant, which will be co-owned with an undisclosed partner. Output of the plant will be use to serve its Iowa customers with surplus power sold to other Midwestern utilities.

" The company studied several new and existing sites throughout the state of Iowa as potential locations for the project," said Jack Alexander, senior vice president of supply and marketing. "The Council Bluffs site came out on top due to its reliable water supply and an efficient rail transportationsystem to deliver the low-sulfur Western coal that will serve as the fuel."

CBEC began operation in 1954 as a small 43 megawatt single unit powerhouse and has been expanded over the years to 800 megawatts. The addition of 900 megawatts will make it the largest in Iowa, including the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant.
