Enron Pursues Permits for Florida Plants
LCG, Jan. 21, 2002--Two sites in Broward County, Florida remain a focus for Enron's power plant development plans, whether or not the company ultimately becomes the developer or sells its environmental permits for the purpose. In both Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach, Enron has filed applications for permits needed for plant construction. The South Florida Water Management District is scheduled on Feb. 14 to consider Enron's request to use the Biscayne Aquifer for emergency cooling purposes. If that and other permits are obtained, construction would need to wait until after a county moratorium on plant construction expired in May.Eric Thode, Enron spokesman, said that the company bankruptcy proceedings would determine whether the permits could be sold, or if Enron would build the plants in order to sell them upon completion to raise money to pay creditors. Thode said, "We have not planned to go forward to the city commission, but we have moved forward with other permits that are required. We believe that South Florida is in need of new power plants."Broward County Commissioners Kristin Jacobs was quoted by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as saying, "We didn't know it (the water permit) was coming. It just kind of showed up on their [the water district's] agenda. ... We couldn't choose a worse neighbor." Jacobs rescheduled a hearing on the issue to make a review of the state's projected power needs while the moratorium is in place.
