Palisades Nuclear Plant Serving Grid Again

LCG, Jan. 22, 2002--The Palisades Nuclear Plant, owned by Consumers Energy, is back on-line following a shutdown for maintenance that began in June 2001.

The unit was brought into operation yesterday, when it had reached 35 percent of maximum output. Palisades is expected to achieve maximum output within the week. The plant's capacity is rated at 789 megawatts.

During the shutdown, 45 control rod drive upper housings were replaced, and diagnostic procedures and major maintenance work were performed. Robert A. Fenech, senior vice president of nuclear, fossil and hydro operations for Consumers Energy, said "Palisades' return to service is a credit to the work of Nuclear management Company (which operates the plant) staff and other outage personnel." He noted, "the replacement of the control rod drive upper housings was a unique project in the plant' 30-year history."

Consumers Energy is the main subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, and as Michigan's largest utility, it provides electricity and natural gas to residents throughout the state's Lower Peninsula.
