Enron Headquarters Monitored by FBI and Department of Justice
LCG, Jan. 23, 2002--Following revelations from a former employee concerning shredding of documents at Enron, the company has confirmed that federal officials have entered and remain within Enron's Houston headquarters.Maureen Castaneda, recently at Enron, told ABC News Monday that she had seen other employees gathering and searching for documents, and observed shredded documents in waste baskets. Tuesday, FBI agents and security personnel were preventing visitors from gaining access to the building, and employees were seen taking items from the building. In other cases, the staff appeared to be bringing back materials that had earlier been removed. Concerns over the possible loss of information due to shredding appears to have been the reason for the officials' presence. At a hearing before U.S. District Judge Melina Harmon, attorney William Lerach showed Harmon a box filled with shredded documents allegedly taken from Enron headquarters. Lerach represents a group that is suing Enron. The House Energy and Commerce Committee was to have signed four subpoenas Tuesday night to be issued to Arthur Andersen executives and employees. The chief executive, Joseph Berardino, the former partner David Duncan, who had been in charge of accounting for Enron, attorney Nancy Temple and risk manager Michael Odom were named as those expected to testify.Today, David Duncan was reported to have said through his attorney that he would not testify without immunity from prosecution.
