Alliant To Build Plant in Iowa

LCG, Feb. 5, 2002--The subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corp., Interstate Power and Light (IP&L) will apply to the Iowa Public Utilities Board to construct a 500-megawat, natural gas-fired plant.

The utility's decision to construct the plant followed a call in November for proposals by independent power companies, but none were submitted. Proposals may still be submitted for five weeks past the Friday, Feb. 8 deadline.

IP&L's plans are based on what the company president, Eliot Protsch, sees as IP&L's obligation to serve Iowa customers. He acknowledged that "increased uncertainties" may have been responsible for the lack of response to the original proposal.

The site for the plant has not been selected yet, but it will likely be brought into operation in 2003 and 2004 in separate stages.
