PUC of Texas Approves Entergy Texas' Plans to Build Over 1,200 MW of Gas-Fired Capacity

LCG, September 12, 2025--Entergy announced yesterday that the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) approved Entergy Texas’ proposal to build two efficient natural gas-fired power plants to support the region’s rapid growth. The combined electric generating capacity of the two facilities, the Legend Power Station and the Lone Star Power Station, will add over 1,200 MW to the Southeast Texas power grid to support new customer demand, increase reliability and lower costs for all customers. Both facilities are scheduled to commence operations by mid-2028.

Alberta Grid Upgrades Urged

LCG, Feb. 12, 2002--ESBI Alberta Inc. and Alberta-based power suppliers want an expansion of the province's transmission infrastructure to handle growing demand for electric power.

Most generation capacity in Alberta is found north of Red Deer. To construct new lines from the northern part of the province to the south, where demand is growing most, ESBI, which manages the transmission system for the province, would first need to obtain rights of way. According to Richard Stout, commercial manager for ESBI, "the line building itself may only take two or three years, but the acquisition of the rights of way to the land could take six or seven years."

Stout estimates that millions of dollars could be spent to obtain necessary easements, but is not sure who would be required to pay for the rights as well as the construction costs.

At least twelve power companies want more transmission lines, among them Calgary-based Enmax Corp. Enmax not only supplies local customers, but has benefitted from exports to Washington State and California. While Alberta customers currently pay for transmission upgrades through a charge on their bills, ESBI has told the Alberta Energy Utilities Board that lines for cross-border sales should be paid for by power suppliers with licenses to conduct such sales.

The Alberta Energy Utilities Board will conduct a hearing on transmission investments in late April.
