Nevada Power Signs Wind Power Deal

LCG, Mar. 4, 2002--Southern Nevada's Nevada Power Co. signed an agreement on Thursday with MNS Wind Co. for the delivery of wind power produced at an 85-megawatt wind farm over 17 years.

The deal requires state regulatory approval. If it receives the go-ahead, the agreement would be the first such agreement in Southern Nevada. "This initial effort is another step in our attempts to diversify our generation base with clean sources of energy and is consistent with our goal of providing safe and reliable service to our customers," the president of Nevada Power, Mark Ruelle, said in a statement.

A recently passed law requires that Nevada Power make renewable power sales amounting to 5 percent of overall energy sales by 2003. By 2015, the requirement will have reached 15 percent. The price on the deal was not disclosed.

The wind farm will consist of 57 wind turbines at the Nevada Test Site. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has supported the test site, which receives Department of Energy funding. Installation is expected to begin during the summer, and be completed by December 2003. Output would be taken from the Nye County portion of the test site, otherwise known as the Shoshone Wind Farm.

MNS Wind is a 50/50 joint venture between Global Renewable Energy Partners, a manufacturer of wind turbines, and Siemens Energy and Automation, which will provide construction services.
