EU Proposal Would Open Electric Market For Corporations
LCG, Mar. 5, 2002--France vetoed a proposal for full liberalization of electric and natural gas markets in order to protect the residential market.EU financial ministers were drafting a proposal for the March 15 and 16 Barcelona summit that included the complete liberalization of electric and natural gas markets, but France found the proposal unacceptable . While all other EU members want complete liberalization, the French are loath to disrupt their pre-election political climate by worrying consumers over residential service.Corporate customers will have a choice in electricity suppliers in 2003 and gas in 2004, according to the new proposal, although the EU's executive commission and other EU countries want complete deregulation by 2005.
