Former Edison President Appointed to PUC
LCG, March 6, 2002A former president of Southern California Edison has been appointed to the California Public Utilities Commission.California Governor Gray Davis named Michael R. Peevey to the PUC. Peevey will take the place of Richard Bilas, who is resigning, citing frustration with policy and his wifes health. Daviss decision has been received negatively by consumer groups because the commission is responsible for regulated Edison, among other utilities, and Peevey, in addition to being the ex-president of Southern California Edison from 1990 to 1993, has a history of pushing for steeper small business and residential rates, according to The Utility Reform Network. However, the California Chamber of Commerce and industrial energy user lobbyists have supported his appointment.Steve Maviglio, Davis spokesman, said that Peevey will be required to divest holdings and remove himself from other positions with a potential for a conflict of interest.
