Korean Union Members Strike Against Privatization

LCG, March 8, 2002-A thirteen hour talk with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) failed to progress as over 5,000 union members continue an illegal strike.

Workers at the South Korean monopoly fear for their jobs as the country prepares for privatizing power. The illegal strike is in its twelfth day, and warrants have been issued for union leaders, although police have made no arrests yet.

Labor Minister Bang Yong-seok said that the government will privatize regardless of strikers and sees "zero possibility to change this policy." KEPCO, having been split into six pieces, plans to sell of all but the sixth part, which leaves nuclear and hydroelectric power to the state.

1,000 temporary workers have been hired, but union leaders refuse to back down. If the government goes through with privatization, the Korean Confederation of Trade Union, consisting of some 600,000 members, says it will join in a sympathy strike.
