Canadian Clean Power Demonstration Plant Announced

LCG, March 11, 2002-Coal-fired electricity producers in Canada announced intentions to make a full-scale 'clean coal' demonstration power plant.

The Canadian Clean Power Coalition (CCPC) will develop and construct this plant in order to experiment with clean coal technology that might be applied to pre-existing coal plants. The CCPC seeks to eliminate environmentally-damaging emissions, including carbon dioxide.

The Canadian Coalition represents companies who together produce over ninety percent of all coal-fired electricity in Canada, including EPCOR, ATCO Power, Ontario Power Generation, SaskPower, Nova Scotia Power, Luscar, and TransAlta. CCPC spokesman and EPCOR president Don Lowry encourages others to join the project, "This is a huge endeavor; we're happy to speak with any organization, government or company interested in joining us."

Coal comprises one fifth of power generation in Canada, but in China, India, and the United States coal and coal-fired plants generate 81, 75, and 57 percent of power respectively.
