China's Three Gorges Dam Awaits Investment

LCG, March 12, 2002-China's 279 foot (185 m) hydroelectric dam project will be launched by the end of this year, pending investment. The Three Gorges dam will span the Yangtze River.

The huge project involves creating a 232 square mile (600 square km) reservoir, subsequently wiping out whole cities. Over one million people are being resettled to other parts of China, including Tibet. Proponents say the main function of the dam is to prevent deadly floods and to generate 18,200 MW of electricity.

The project still awaits over $400 million in investment from those inside China, although more international offerings are to be extended to Hong Kong and possibly London investors. Laws are already being established as to where power will go and what choices local companies will have over where to get power, although some scientists still question the engineering viability of such a large dam.
