Debate on Vietnamese Dam Pushed Back
LCG, Mar. 29, 2002--A vote on a large dam project in Vietnam has been delayed by the national assembly until the second session late this year, government media reported.Plans had previously been submitted by the government, and were allegedly found to require further work, according to the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. The dam, the size of which has been revised downward, would require displacement of up to 100,000 people and cost up to $4 billion. The region selected, in the northwestern Son La province, is earthquake-prone.The assembly has historically been cooperative with the Communist Party leadership, but has expressed a more unilateral stance recently. The need for expanded electric power supplies is seen in annual growth in demand of 14 percent in the last few years. Annual growth is projected to be above 10 percent for the next twenty years.
