Deadline Set for Enron to Produce California Documents

LCG, Mar. 29, 2002--Documents that may give California officials insight into possible price gouging by Enron must be submitted to state officials over the next three months, San Francisco Superior Court Judge A. James Robertson II ruled Thursday.

Should Enron fail to comply with the order, it would face contempt charges, the office of California's attorney general, Bill Lockyer, said. Enron spokeswoman Karene Denne said, "we always intended to cooperate, we just did not have the personnel available to go through all of the records."

According to the ruling, Enron's California offices must make subpoenaed documents available within three weeks, while its Houston and Portland offices will have six weeks within which to obtain the documents. Electronic data must be made available by June 26, the final deadline.

The attorney general's office is seeking information relating to possible market manipulation during California's power crisis of last year. Four other firms have had documentation from the period subpoenaed.
