NY to Discuss NYC Power Plant Projects

LCG, April 10, 2002-New York officials will discuss new plants and transmission lines serving New York City and Long Island.

New York Public Service Commission scheduled for April 26 public discussion of Neptune Regional Transmission System LLC's proposed transmission lines from a New Jersey GPU/FirstEnergy substation to New York. A 54 mile line to the Long Island Power Authority in Nassau County and a 36 mile line to Consolidate Edison's (Con Edison) Manhattan system, both 600 MW, were proposed in order to bring power to New York City and Long Island from Mid-Atlantic generators.

The New York Department of Public Service has arranged a forum in which the siting procedure will be described regarding the construction of an Entergy Corp. 330 MW natural gas-fired peaking generator at the Indian Point nuclear station in Westchester County 35 miles north of New York City.

On April 18th, two New York Siting Boards will respectively discuss factors such as emissions for a proposed American National Power, 1,100-MW facility in Rockland County, 30 miles north of New York City, and Con Edison's proposed 360-MW repowering of its East River Station in Manhattan.

Since 1999 only 600 MW capacity has been built for NYC although 23,000 MW had been proposed. Only 44 MW of 9,000 were constructed for Long Island over the same period. Therefore energy experts predict only one in three generators will be built.
