Florida Power & Light Seeks to Expand Capacity at Two Plants
LCG, Jan. 15, 2002--Two existing sites in Martin and Manatee counties will be the focus of plans by Florida Power & Light to expand its Florida generation capacity.According to a statement, the company wants to make the upgrades, which represent 1,900 megawatts of new combined-cycle, natural gas-fired capacity, by mid-2005. The Manatee plant, east of Bradenton on the state's west coast, would be expanded by 1,100 megawatts. At the Martin plant, gas-fired combustion turbines would be switched to combined-cycle technology, and two additional turbines would be added, for 800 megawatts of new capacity.FPL selected expansion as superior to having to buy wholesale power from other suppliers. "Thanks to the arrival of a new natural gas pipeline on Florida's west coast, we also plan to use natural gas in combination with oil at our existing Manatee generating units," FPL president Paul Evanson was quoted as saying.Referring to the Manatee plant, Evanson noted that by using natural gas in addition to oil, the company would be pursuing "the reliability of FPL's system by supporting our fuel diversity strategy."In order for the projects to proceed, FPL will submit its proposals to the Florida Public Service Commission, and file necessary environmental certification applications.
