Brazil Suspends Gas Development

LCG, March 20, 2000- Plans to develop Brazil's natural gas importation have been suspended while the Brazilian government rethinks its energy production.

Brazil has been experiencing a severe energy shortage, rationing energy over the last nine months. Nine tenths of Brazil's electricity comes from hydroelectric plants, and drought has seriously limited energy generation.

The government had planned to expand gas imports from Bolivia to generate more energy but has decided to reevaluate its gas-fired energy needs first.

In October of 2001 international companies were allowed to apply to expand the pre-existing 30 million cubic meter pipeline.

Many foreign investors want access to the pipeline but are dismayed at the falling Brazilian currency, 16 percent last year over the dollar. In addition, Brazil's thermoelectric development has stagnated and only a few of the planned gas-fired plants have been built.
