EU Members Meet 2000 Targeted Emissions

LCG, April 29, 2002-Although emissions increased in 1999 and 2000, the European Union has kept carbon dioxide levels under those of 1990.

According to the European Environment Agency, carbon dioxide emission is half a percent lower than that of 1990, which means the fifteen-member Union has kept its 2000 goal of stabilizing CO2 emissions levels.

However, emissions have recently increased from levels before 1999, and levels have not been significantly reduced; therefore the EU has more than halfway to go before reaching its Kyoto Protocol target. The 15 European Union members contribute a combined total of 24 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions.

The U.K.'s stepped-up coal and fossil-fuel use, as well as Spain's increased emission, are two important factors preventing the EU from meeting its target. From 1999 to 2000, Spain's emission of greenhouse gases increased by 33.7 percent.

Despite slight and mildly worrisome setbacks, EU environment officials insist that the European Union will make its target to cut total emissions of six greenhouse gases by 8 percent from the 1990 level by sometime between 2008 and 2012. Germany, the largest emitter in the Union, has alone cut greenhouse gas emission by 19.1 percent between 1990 and 2000.
