Accusations Impel Energy America to Change Marketing

LCG, May 6, 2002-Accused of using illegal marketing tactics to sell natural gas door-to-door, Michigan's Energy America will change its marketing program.

Having negotiated with the company since March, Michigan Attorney General Jennifer M. Granholm expects Energy America to change its marketing techniques. She contends that the marketing practices used by Energy America violate Michigan law and mislead consumers.

The company has not entered any formal agreement with the Attorney General but has publicized its intent to suspend door-to-door marketing. Outstanding consumer complaints and refunds to wronged customers are still awaiting resolution.

Michiganders entered into a gas choice program in 1998, and since then the office of the Attorney General has received over 675 complaints against Energy America. After increased complaints in 1999 Granholm required the use of a confirmation system so that new Energy America customers were officially notified of a switch in natural gas service.

Recently the complaints have increased again, 130 so far this year. The company contracts out door-to-door sales, sending an independent company to sell its natural gas. Complaints include forgery of customer's signatures on documents changing gas service and failure to disclose the company for which the contracted salesmen work.
