Congress to Vote on Nevada Yucca Mountain Bill

LCG, May 8, 2002--The U.S. House will vote on the nuclear waste disposal site today, and the Senate will hold 3 hearings later this month.

Despite Nevada's objections and the Nevada governor's visit to Washington to veto President Bush's decision to choose Yucca Mountain, the House is expected to approve Yucca Mountain as the future dumpsite of high-level radioactive waste, overriding the state's authority.

Currently waste is stored at nuclear plants nationwide, and about 70,000 metric tons is waiting for more permanent housing.

Many opposed to the location assert that issues like groundwater and seismic activity have been overlooked and that no other site was investigated as an alternative. Others fear accidents or attacks during transportation through populated areas.

The Senate has planned 3 hearings on the bill, May 13, 16, and 23. They will feature Nevada witnesses, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, and testimony from technical experts respectively.

A Senate Energy Committee vote is expected in early June.
